DMOZ was started in 1998 as an effort to organize whole world wide web by utilizing volunteer editors and not using machines. During startup, it was projected as a challenger to Yahoo Directory as it was needed too much. But this machine powered search engines had left both directories to be an archaic only.

When Google came into existnce in 1998 the end of human-curation started. As Google brought two biggest features required by any internet user- relevant results and fetching results from all over the web. Yahoo had shifted its concentration from directory to machine-generated results. Yahoo completely pulled the plug from its Yahoo Directory unit in December 2014. DMOZ continued to put efforts in the maintaining the directory. But most of the users and marketers has long forgotten this human-powered directory.
