Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) Review: When you think of a class quality smartphone with a not-so-bloated price tag, you think of Samsung Galaxy A series. This is the next best flagship by Samsung after its Galaxy S range. Unquestionably, A series misses the uber-premium-ness of the first line of mobile phones, it ensembles some essential class features. Features like a 5.2 inches AMOLED display, metal-glass body combo, 14nm Exynos chipset, 16MP f/1.9 front and back cameras embellish the next Samsung’s showcase, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) smartphone. It’s time to have a closer look at the phone and see how good this premium mid-ranger is.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) Review

The Machine: Hardware

The phone measures 146.1×71.4×7.9mm, standard for a 5.2 inches’ phablet. It is on the heavier side (157g) when it comes to its weight, as compared to other phones of similar size, like Huawei P9 (144g) and HTC U Play (143g). The body is made up of an aluminum frame, with the dual glass sandwich design.

There is a home button, as usual, with embedded fingerprint sensors, which is good but certainly not the fastest in the industry. There is no notification LED. IP68 certification for water and dust resistance is quite a feature in A series phone (iPhone 7 has this!). Samsung Galaxy A5’s wired interface is more advanced, comparing to S7. The phone has one of the favorite combos- USB Type-C port and 3.5mm jack.

One differentiating feature the phone has is its loudspeaker that is placed on the right side, above the power button. It’s a good position for a loudspeaker to be for ringtones and audio. As in all Samsung mobiles, the phone lacks stereo speakers.

A5 2017 has two card slots, one nanoSIM slot on the left side and a microSD card slot on the top. The phone has a modest minimalistic back with the only camera and LED flash plots.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017): Display

Super AMOLED display, 5.2 inches’ panel has a full high dimensional resolution. Diamond pixel arrangement with 421 PPI density makes the sightless sharp that the ones having LCD with equal subpixels for each color. Maximum brightness and infinite contrast attract, especially if in Auto mode as the display boosts with better color and bright conditions. The phone is sunlight legible, better as compared to A3 (2017).

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017): Connectivity

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is available in single SIM and dual SIM versions, with two card slots each. The phone is well stocked with connectivity options, such as dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, NFC, Bluetooth v4.2, MST and an FM radio receiver. The smartphone lacks an IR transmitter.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017): Battery Life

The A series phablet is powered by a 3,000mAH battery with a life of about 14 and half hours of Wi-Fi web browsing. Quite an awesome performance as compared to its A3 counterpart. Phone’s endurance rate is 95h.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017): Software

The A series newbie has Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating systems. Redesigned user interface known as Samsung Grace UX is introduced. The phone features ‘always on display’ mode with three main views of the clock, calendar, and image with customization.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017): Camera

The primary camera has a 16MP sensor with 27mm-equiv. a lens with f/1.9 aperture. Swipe gesture is enabled by Grace UX OS. The camera captures video having a maximum resolution of 1080p/30fps. Selfie camera is again 16MP f/1.9 unit. The front camera lacks autofocus feature. Photo gallery automatically integrates with Samsung cloud which syncs all the photos into three categories- Pictures, Albums, and Stories.

This A series phone is quite close to Galaxy S series phone, perhaps, Samsung got the alphabet wrong. The phone resembles Galaxy S7 flagship. The phone is beautifully built and would qualify for being an ideal deal who can’t dig deeper into pockets.
