Sony Corporation is the biggest supplier of image sensors for smartphones, today they have announced an effective 48 megapixels IMX586 stacked CMOS image sensor for smartphone cameras. As per the source, this image sensor features the world’s smallest and first Ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8 μm which made it possible to squeeze 48 effective megapixels on a 1/2-type unit.

Sony will start shipping IMX586 image sensors from September of this year at a price of 3000 JPY (around $27) without tax.

With 48 megapixels (8000×6000), IMX586 is a tough rival of high-performance SLR cameras which will allow users to capture beautiful and high-resolution pictures with a smartphone.

This latest sensor Quad Bayer color filter array, which brings adjacent 2×2 pixels in the same color making sensor highly-sensitive. While capturing images in low light conditions, the signals from 4 adjacent pixels are added and processed resulting in a sensitivity of 1.6 μm pixels (12 megapixels), which gives bright and low noise images.

Another main advantage of IMX 586 is that Sony included its control technology and signal processing functionalities directly into the image sensor which gives real-time output and a camera with the much better dynamic range i.e. four times greater than conventional cameras.

Even though the sensors will begin shipping in September but it’s still a mystery when we will be able to get our hands on a smartphone with this effective 48 megapixels camera smartphone.
